Talking across the pre- and post-computer border

I am working hard to finish a book project of my mother's. She has been using a typewriter and pencil, tools she mastered around the time of the Second World War. I am using LaTeX.

Periodically — after I've added some graphics ("illustrations") or resized them — I print out the altered pages for her. Of course, LaTeX renumbers every page afresh each time pdftex generates a new version of the document.

My mother then manually renumbers the pages with a pen, to what she considers the "true" pagination — the one on the master version, text-only, that I printed for her a month ago.
