Haydn on Originality

I find this in my diary from the summer of 2006, when I was living in Berlin:

And here is the original of the famous Haydn quotation:

„Ich war von der Welt abgesondert, niemand in meiner Nähe konnte mich an mir selbst irremachen und quälen, und so musste ich original werden.”

“I was cut off from the world; no one where I was could estrange me from myself or victimize me, and so I had to become original.”

A great sentiment, truly, and to be read each time one prepares to listen to Haydn.

I found the original on the German version of Wikipedia, which on many topics is better and more fully written than the English version, even though the English version has more entries. The German Wikipedia, anyway, has the second largest number of entries.
